Yvonne Schmidt

Yvonne Schmidt

BIRTH: 01/12/1957

DEATH: 05/20/2017

“We loved you as if there were no tomorrow, and then one day there wasn’t.”

Yvonne L. Schmidt, 60, of Darlington, Pa., went home to be with the Lord on May 20, 2017, at Heritage Valley Hospital, surrounded by so many who loved her dearly.

Our dearest mother dedicated her life to raising her three boys, Jeremy K. (Jennifer) Ely, Christopher (Chris) Schmidt and Cory (Kelly) Schmidt, who all meant the world to her. When her boys married, Yvonne welcomed us “in-laws” with open, loving arms, as if we had been there from day one. When we were all together, you would find us gathered around her dining room table, cracking jokes, or rehashing funny memories. Most of the time, she found herself on the receiving end of our wisecracks, and our words were met with a loving backhand to the arm, or a sneaky flip of a certain finger. Don’t be fooled though, she could dish it out just as well (sometimes better) than she could take it. Those dining room chats will never be quite the same. We already miss her laughter, her fun-loving spirit, and her tin of no bakes.

Yvonne could have just burst with happiness when she became “LaLa” to her grandchildren, Ainsley Paige Ely and Gunnar Allen Ely. They were her pride and joy, so much so, that she never said a word when they tortured her with hours upon hours of Peppa Pig or Paw Patrol episodes. They loved to snuggle up and watch Hocus Pocus, and eat freeze pops and white cheese popcorn. She never missed the chance to teach them a good knock-knock joke.

Yvonne is also survived by her brothers, Robert (Brenda) Sloppy, Michael (Jacque) Gray, and Shawn (Toni) Sloppy; her mother-in-law, Vi Schmidt; numerous sisters-in-law, a large group of amazing friends, and a very special neighbor. You have all been an exceptional support system for her throughout the years. She could not have gone on this long without each and every one of you. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sestito for the excellent care and compassion he showed Yvonne through the years.

Yvonne fought a long hard battle for many, many years, and the fight she had in her was nothing short of inspirational. When she wasn’t busy beating odds, she would keep herself busy with a crossword puzzle, cookbook, or her favorite, a good sales ad. She enjoyed trying new recipes, shopping, shooting pool, tending to her flowers and volunteering for the American Cancer Society’s “Team Flip Flop”, a cause dear to her heart. She always had a special birthday, holiday or anniversary card on its way in the mail for those she loved most. Yvonne was a loving wife and mother, a caring friend, and she made a mean meatloaf. She has left a void in our hearts (and bellies) that no other person (or meatloaf) will ever fill.

When she reached the gates of heaven, she was eagerly greeted by her mother and father, Beth Ann and Robert Sloppy; her brother, Patrick Dwyer, and her father-in-law, Charles (Snuffy) Schmidt.

She was also reunited with the love of her life and husband of 31 years, Charles Allen Schmidt, who she missed tremendously. At this point, we can all take solace in knowing that Yvonne and Charlie have already hopped on a motorcycle, hit a flea market, and are enjoying an eternity of winding, back country roads, together again.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 p.m. until time of service at 6 p.m. in the GABAUER-LUTTON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 117 Blackhawk Road, Chippewa Twp., gabauerfamilyfuneralhomes.com. Pastor Thomas Scott of the Brush Run United Methodist Church will officiate.

Family request that memorial contributions be made to Team Flip Flop of the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh PA 15205.
