Gwendolyn L. Smith, 87, of Baden, died Monday, March 26, 2018, following a long good-bye due to progressive dementia.
Born October 4, 1930, in Baden, she was the daughter of the late Mildred P. and Harold Reader, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, James G. Smith; her youngest son, James, and two great-grandchildren.
Surviving are a son, Gary and his wife Jeanne, Santa Cruz, Calif.; a daughter, Glenda and her husband, Rodney, Economy Borough, Pa.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her beloved sister, Hazel Wozniak, Baden, and her beloved brother, Harold “Bud” H. Reader Jr. and his wife Dorothy, Ashland, Ohio.
Gwen was a lifelong member of the Baden United Methodist Church.
Known for her love of dogs and giving shelter to rescue dogs, she also enjoyed volunteering. A Cub Scout den mother, she also had over 20 years volunteering with the Ambridge Area Meals-on-Wheels program, and volunteered assembling Bible Braille books at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, New Sewickley Twp.
Friends will be received Monday from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m. at the GABAUER-MATTER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 1133 Church St., Ambridge, gabauerfamilyfuneralhomes.com. Rev. Jim Young will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Baden United Methodist Church, 420 Dippold Avenue, Baden, PA 15005 or to the Alzheimer’s Association (Greater PA Chapter), 1100 Liberty Avenue, Suite E-201, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
