James C. Balmer, 93, of Beaver Falls, died Saturday, July 22, 2017, in his daughter’s residence.
Born May 13, 1924 in East Palestine, OH, he was the son of the late Merle and Nora (Brooks) Balmer. Jim was very active throughout his life. A 1942 graduate of New Brighton High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served with the 4th Regiment, Communications, in the South Pacific during World War II. Returning home after the war, he worked for the Bell Telephone Company for 39 years, retiring from Verizon as a supervisor in the mid 1980s. Jim was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Beaver Falls, where he previously served as church treasurer, president of the Board of Trustees, and member of the Administrative Council.
A long-time member of the Beaver Falls Turners, he loved bowling and usually carried a 180 average. Jim was also a life member of the Eureka Royal Arch Chapter #167 of the Masons, and had been a member of the Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh, and the New Castle Consistory. He enjoyed the outdoors, from hunting to designing and building a cabin in the Cook Forest area, which is still in the family. He enjoyed helping his family and his church with many handyman projects. Jim was an avid Steelers fan.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Marian Reed Balmer (1993); a brother, Merle Balmer; and a sister, Elizabeth Cumberledge.
Jim is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth & Douglas Aley; two grandchildren, Dexter (Lindsay) Aley and Amber Aley; two brothers, Richard (Diedre) Balmer and Matthew (Mary) Balmer, all of Beaver Falls; his sister-in-law, Janice Balmer, of Darlington, PA.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his second wife, Arlene (Grguras) Balmer, and her daughter and granddaughter, Lori & Sabrina Ross, of Sigel, PA.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 1-4pm and 6-9pm in the Gabauer-Lutton Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. 1117-5th Avenue Beaver Falls www.gabauerfamilyfuneralhomes.com. where services will be held on Thursday at 11am. Pastor Jan Davis will officiate.
Entombment will follow at Beaver Cemetery. The Honor Guard will meet at the cemetery at 11:45am to conduct full military honors.
