Obituary

Elsie Elizabeth Shadle

Valley View, PA

Elsie Elizabeth Shadle died peacefully on January 24, 2018. Elsie, age 93, died at Country Meadows in Bridgeville, PA, where she had lived happily for the last 3 ½ years near her son and his wife. Elsie lived for her first 90 years in Valley View, where she was born on March 3, 1924, to Mamie and Charles Stutzman. Elsie was the last to survive of her five sisters and six brothers. She was married for 62 years to Kenneth Shadle of Fountain, who died on January 24, 2005.

Elsie worked at the Valley View Post Office for 35 years, where she loved interacting with the community, especially children. Elsie and Ken were longtime, active members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, where Elsie chaired the church’s popular Easter candy project for many years. An avid reader, Elsie loved cooking and entertaining friends and family at her home on West Maple Street. In her last 3 years, she was active in the Country Meadows community, where she was beloved by staff and residents alike. She served on the dining committee, participated in a book club, and played Bingo with her friends. Another highlight of Elsie’s life was staying in touch with her three cherished grand-daughters and their families.

Elsie is survived by her son, Bill, and her daughter-in-law, Jane, of Pittsburgh; her 3 beloved grand-daughters, Erica (Andy) Fouss of Lewis Center, Ohio; Christina Shadle (Bruce Ucan) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Anne Shadle of Louisville; and 5 great-grandchildren, Levi, Ezra, and Miriam Fouss; and Liliana and Elena Ucan Shadle. Additionally, Elsie is survived by many nieces and nephew of the Hegins Valley and Philadelphia, as well as longtime friends in Valley View and Hegins, with whom she loved to visit, by phone and in person.

A memorial service was held for Elsie at Country Meadows on January 28, and a service will also be held later this spring in Valley View at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Fountain Community Cemetery, Fountain. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Postal Employees Relief Fund at postalrelief.com, or PO Box 7630; Woodbridge VA 22195.
