Obituary

On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Evdoxia Matsoukas Pagalos, 92, slipped away peacefully as she slept in her home; her loving son Yianni John Pagalos at her side, her beloved dog, Taki, at her feet, the sun shining, and the wind in the chimes.

Her passions were cooking, baking, and gardening.  More than the food, she loved feeding all of her friends, family, and neighbors.  Her kitchen was the heart of her beloved home, where she spent the happiest of days.  She truly loved nothing more than to quadruple a recipe to feed that many more loved ones.  She was a life-long member of Ladies Philoptochos, A.H.E.P.A., the American Legion of Beaver Falls, and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Born on November 15, 1929, in Rentina, Greece, she was the daughter of the late Yianni and Maria Matsoukas.  In 1952, she traveled to Beaver Falls to care for her adoptive parents, her uncle and aunt, the late William C. and Grace Matsoukas, in the house where she would spend the rest of her long, happy life.

In the Greek American community, she was revered for both her culinary skills and her generosity.  Evdoxia took under her wing, many (young brides) who immigrated to Beaver Falls from Greece without cooking or language skills.  She welcomed into her kitchen anyone wanting to learn.  Many successful cooks credit Evdoxia as being their first teacher.  No visitor left her kitchen without gifts of food and knowledge.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Steve L. Pagalos, whom she married in 1958; her brother, Elias Matsoukas; her sister, Koula Kassianos; and her cousins, Nick and Frank Matsukas.

In addition to her son Yianni, at home, she is survived by two sons, Lucas (Darlene) Pagalos of Royal Oak, MI and Vious (Susan) Pagalos of Ann Arbor, MI; her grandchildren, Steven (Shannon) Pagalos, Christina (Aaron) Letterley, and Frank Pagalos; a sister-in-law, Eleni Matsoukas of Lamia, Greece; her Goddaughter, Vassie (John) Clemenza of Hermitage, PA; a beloved friend, Kate Kelley, of Pittsburgh, PA; numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends across the USA and in Greece.

Friends will be received on Sunday, March 28, 2021 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the GABAUER-LUTTON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 117 Blackhawk Road, Chippewa Twp., www.gabauerfamilyfuneralhomes.com.  Evdoxia will lie in state on Monday, March 1, 2021 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, from 10AM until 11AM, at which time a Service will be celebrated with Father Anastasios “Andrew” Athanasiou as celebrant.  Due to current restrictions and health concerns, a face covering, or mask is required and social distancing will be observed.   This service will be livestreamed on the church's website-http://htgoc.org/live.

Private interment will be in the Beaver Falls Cemetery.

  1. My brother, Steve, called to tell me of Evdoxia’s passing. I first met her when she and your father were engaged. I remember her as sweet, kind and very generous. I’m so sorry for your loss. May her memory be eternal.
