Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Jean Remaley Higgins announces her passing from this life on April 9, 2023.

Dr. Higgins is survived by her devoted husband, James, married nearly 40 years; and her only child, Frances Lagana. She leaves behind a brother, William Remaley; as well as a niece and nephew, Ellen and Christopher Remaley, respectively.

Jean spent her life’s career as a public servant and school educator enriching the lives of children and young adults. She lived by fostering a desire to promote literacy and learning in all the students that she encountered. Jean was admired for her strength in bringing people together to resolve difficult situations and did so with abundant grace and humility. In her eyes, all individuals were equal and worthy.

Dr. Higgins retired as Superintendent of the Beaver Falls School District in 1998 and went on to mentor Doctoral students at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh for many years to follow.

She was a valued and vital member of many local community organizations and a champion for the preservation of the Carnegie Free Library in downtown Beaver Falls.

No services will be held and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations to the Carnegie Library as well as to the UPMC Cardiothoracic Research Foundation or Hospice Care be made in her honor. Details for contributions can be found through the GABAUER-LUTTON FUNERAL HOME- 117 Blackhawk Rd., Chippewa Twp.- www.gabauerfamilyfuneralhomes.com.

Any individual who was fortunate enough to have had this beautiful person touch their lives will never forget her greatness. It will live on in us forever.
