Obituary

John L. Yeager, 82, of Chippewa Township, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

Born on November 2, 1943, in Ambridge, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Ferencik) Yeager.

John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth; a sister, Phyllis Rowley of Conway; a son, Benjamin (Mia) of Bryn Mawr; a daughter, Eve of Chippewa Twp; grandsons, Garen and Gabe Yeager; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and Ernest; and a sister, Mary Fraser.

John graduated from Ambridge High School and Geneva College.  He was a life science teacher in the Blackhawk School District for 35 years.  He had many wonderful memories of his students, their families, fellow teachers, and administrators.  His morning routine included breakfast at the Hot Dog Shoppe in Chippewa, where he enjoyed chatting with his friends, former students, and staff.

He served in many capacities at the First United Methodist Church in Ellwood City.

His interests included fishing, landscaping, golfing with his friends, and travelling internationally with his wife and family.  He received many awards for woodworking and sculpting.  John was never bored, spending time designing, creating and rebuilding a wide range of projects – everything from homes, boats, and to his final project, the restoration of a 1957 Jaguar XK 150 coupe.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s honor to the Lupus Foundation of America, 2121 K Street NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20037 or online at lupus.org.

  1. I am very sorry for your loss. I was very fortunate to have worked with Mr. Yeager while I attended Geneva College and did my student teaching at Blackhawk. Though it was over 30 years ago, I remember how pleasant my time with Mr. Yeager was. He was such an energetic teacher who engaged the students, and I learned so much from him. I was happy to read in his obituary that he enjoyed many happy years after his time at Blackhawk. A life very well-lived.

  2. Our sincere condolences to Ruth, Ben, Eve and family. John was a wonderful man with so many talents. He will surely be missed by many.

  3. So sorry for your loss! Mr. Yeager was such a great, kind and fun teacher at Highland in the 70s! I loved having him in Science, and it was a fun and special day when he came to wood shop one time and showed us his unique method of carving! As he told it, the experts would watch him and be amazed because he used the “wrong “ chisels, but he was obviously a very skilled craftsman. I wish I had known that he hung out at the HDS in Chippewa, I would have loved to stop in for a visit. I look forward to seeing him in heaven!

  4. So sorry for your loss! John was a special neighbor and I enjoyed talking to him about my plants in my yard.
Also reflect the time his indoor cat got out. We walked everywhere trying to find it. Here it was under my shed (not very far from his house) and Ruth came over and the cat went right to her.
John was dressed from head to toe in what looked like a hazmat suit. He was afraid the cat was going to scratch him!

Condolences to all who loved and knew Mr. Yeager. As a wonderful facilitator of learning, he had a major influence on me and I am sure many others. Because of his genuine interest to pass on knowledge to his students in creative and fun ways, I became a science junkie. His excitement was contagious, that is for certain. God bless him. May he rest in peace knowing his job was exceedingly well done.
