Lawrence Novak, 85, of Brighton Twp., passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020.
He was born April 22, 1934, in Johnstown, Pa., the son of the late John and Amelia Hovel Novak.
He graduated from Johnstown High School, received his B.A. from Indiana University of Pa. and did graduate work at Carnegie Mellon University and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. For 32 years he taught advanced art at Midland High School, as well as elementary and junior high classes. He was instrumental in organizing the first Junior Achievement Organization in the Midland, Western Beaver and South Side School Districts. He was the head track coach for seven years at Midland High School and ran the Invitational Track Meet each year in which 28 local high schools participated.
After retirement he opened the Eaglenest Gallery and Studios in Beaver, where he gave art lessons for children and adults for 11 years. He also was the instructor for the Beaver Art Group for 25 years, the Crucible Management Club Art Group and a member of the Midland Arts Council.  He was a charter member of the Beaver County Art Teachers’ Association and was involved in establishing the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton. He was also a member and past president of the Western Beaver School Board and a member of the PSEA and MEA for all his teaching career.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver, and the Towne Square Morning Coffee Club, where all the world’s problems were discussed but never solved.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Barbara Boggs Novak; two daughters, Christine (Edward) Akers of St. Charles, Mo.  and Patricia (Mark) McCloskey of St. Louis, Mo. and a stepson, Anthony Hallett of Beaver; a former daughter-in-law, Diane Hallett of Hopewell Twp.; four grandchildren, Katherine McCloskey of Des Plains, Ill, Christopher (Jessica) Cook of O’Fallon, Mo., Amanda Hallett of Pittsburgh and Andrea Hallett (Mario) Perez of San Antonio, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Maria and Lila Cook and Savannah and Lucia Perez.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Daniel and Kenneth Novak.
Visitation will be at the TODD FUNERAL HOME, 340 Third St., Beaver, on Monday, January 13, 2020, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver by the Rev. Ron Cepak. Friends are asked to meet at the church for the service.  Burial will take place at a later date in the Beaver Cemetery.
