Obituary

Rachel (Cosentino) Cercone

Peacefully, in her sleep, our precious loved one Rachel Cercone went to be with the Lord and her predeceased husband Vincent Cercone on April 17, 2020.

Born July 15, 1922 she migrated from Calabria Italy at 5 years old, her life was a legendary example of kindness, compassion and forgiveness.

She was a devoted wife, sister, aunt and mother figure who deeply loved her family and embraced every moment with them.  We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from her during her 97 years. She was proud of her family and loved ones and we are now left with the task to be the people she molded us into and emulate her in our remaining time with kindness, love for one another and forgiveness.

She is survived by her brother Augie Cosentino (Martha-deceased), her sister Dolly Kittner (Donald) and she was preceded in death by her sister Carol Moore and parents Ralph and Rose Cosentino, brother-in-law Frank (Barb) Cercone and surviving nieces and nephews Carolyn (Matthew) Foyt, Don Kittner (Pam), Dan Kittner (Suzette), David Kittner (Maureen), Doug Kittner, Ralph (Connie) Cosentino, David (Lisa) Cosentino and Cindy Wilson, Patricia (Joe) Langevin, Jimmy (Linda) Aloye, Margie (Jeremy) Hackett, Annie (Mark) Steller, and Tony Cercone.

She was a loving and passionately supportive aunt to her many nieces and nephews and an unwavering friend to everyone.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

  1. Love you, Aunt Rae!

So many fond memories of the kindest, most loving and positive person I’ve ever known, it’s difficult to pick just one. The chex mix, oyster crackers, and pepperoni rolls she’d make sure to have for me and my brothers at Christmas will never be forgotten, nor will her memories of riding her grandfather’s donkey down to the beach from her village in Italy; or how she and Uncle Vince met while dancing! So many others, as well! The model train she bought him at Christmas when they still lived in a tiny apartment in Rochester–just because she knew how much he wanted it (with more than enough hinting from Uncle Vince haha). The house fire that burned a wall, but swerved to miss a rosary and crucifix that hung there: my first (but certainly not last) realization that miracles are real! The secret code she and a Uncle Vince used when writing during WWII, so that she finally figured out where he was stationed (Seward, Alaska)! Her constant smile, an infectious laugh, and a warm heart will never be forgotten…and this from a little woman who never reached 100 lbs!

For everyone reading, I’ll be offering a Mass privately for Aunt Rae this evening. The last time I called her, she’d been unresponsive, but when I was put on speaker phone so that I could bless her, the nurse said Aunt Rae’s lips began to move along with the Hail Mary! And, as a final thought, I will share some words that came to me a few weeks ago while I was praying for her. It really felt like God gave a bit of a chuckle and said, “Oh, don’t worry about Aunt Rae! She’s so nice and light, she’ll rise quickly to me…”

    Amen Lord!

  3. There’s so much to say about Auntie…her love, kindness, words of wisdom and respect of others . Joe and I will miss her yearly visits with us in Florida and all her delicious recipes she would make and share. Now she’s in heaven with God and the love of her life Uncle V. She is now an angel watching over us all . Thank you Auntie for all you’ve done. We will miss you but you will forever be in our hearts and prayers.
